How many tables do I need for my wedding?

120 guests at tables of 8 need 15 tables. A sweetheart table makes it 16.

Enter your guests, table shape and seats per table. You get the table count, the spare seats and a small floor sketch.

How it works

  1. The head or sweetheart table seats its people first, if you have one.
  2. Everyone else is divided by the seats per table, rounded up to a whole table.
  3. Spare seats are all seats minus your guests.

What we assume

  • Your guest count includes the two of you, and children who need their own seat.
  • Every guest table has the same shape and seat count.
  • Seat choices match the planner's.
  • The sketch shows the tables, not your room. Your venue knows what really fits.

Questions

How many people fit at a round table?

Ask your venue or rental company, because guides differ. WebstaurantStore lists 8 at a 60-inch (5 ft) round and 8 to 10 at a 72-inch (6 ft) round (its chart says 10). Hill Country Event Rentals lists 6 to 8 and 8 to 10. Chair style and place settings change the fit.

Should I leave spare seats?

A seat or two helps when a plus-one or a late RSVP turns up. If the answer shows no spare seats at all, one late guest means a new table, so it is worth checking with your venue how much room there is.

Do a sweetheart table and a head table count?

Yes. Choose one and we count it as a table, and the people at it come out of your guest count. A sweetheart table seats the two of you; a head table usually adds the wedding party.

Is this the same as a table plan?

This gives you the number of tables. A table plan, or seating chart in the US, says who sits where. You can make one for free in the planner.
